411sjICI9ML._SX302_BO1,204,203,200_.jpgAs poker theory develops, the field is becoming more abstruse and mathematical; gradually becoming less accessible to the layperson. The Intelligent Poker Player by Philip Newall aims to reverse this trend by presenting a cohesive and sophisticated method of play in plain English. This approach in principle can be used to analyze any form of poker, although this book mainly shows applications in the popular forms of limit and no-limit hold em.

The Intelligent Poker Player is also the first book to discuss the emergent field of artificial poker intelligence otherwise known as poker robots. The best computers are capable of playing heads-up limit hold em at a world class level, and this book deconstructs some interesting features of their play.

And finally, professional poker is a risky career choice. So in addition to the strategy chapters which include topics such as Information Hiding, Middle Game Concepts, and No-Limit Hold em: Applications and Extensions, the author will show how to mitigate avoidable risks with topics such as Bankroll Management and Shot Selection, Risk Preferences, Psychological Biases, Investing, and Predicting Future Poker Returns.

About the Author

Philip has always been interested in strategy games, and especially poker since Late Night Poker first appeared on British T.V at the turn of the millennium.

Later, around the time the online poker boom started to gain momentum in 2003, he discovered the books of Sklansky and Malmuth, and started reading the forums at twoplustwo dot com. Philip has played heads-up and six-max online limit hold em as his main source of income for the past six years, with lifetime winnings of well over a million dollars.

This book also reflects Philip’s academic interests: in 2009 he graduated with a BSc in Economics and Statistics from University College London, and he s currently studying towards the final level of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) program. He strongly believes that studying a range of outside topics can help improve your poker game.

Philip and his girlfriend Joey currently live in London, and you can follow Phillip at pnewall dot blogspot dot com.
